1 dead, 1 critical after crash

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — A 32-year-old Gould City woman died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Tuesday night in Mackinac County’s Portage Township.

The woman, identified as Stephanie Maynard, was a passenger on the motorcycle, driven by Andrew Loer, 26, also of Gould City.

Loer remains in critical condition following the crash.

According to the Michigan State Police post in St. Ignace, police were dispatched to the scene on Sandtown Road around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows the westbound motorcycle collided with an eastbound vehicle that was turning north into a private driveway.

The vehicle was being driven by a 21-year-old Newberry man, who was uninjured in the incident.

Maynard was pronounced dead at the scene, and Loer was transported to Helen Newberry Joy hospital in critical condition. He was later transferred to UP Health System-Marquette. Neither of the motorcycle’s occupants were wearing helmets at the crash, police say.

The accident remains under investigation.
