Crews battle fire in Manistique

MANISTIQUE — Manistique Public Safety and Volunteer Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire Saturday morning in Manistique Township that caused extensive damage to personal property.

According to a press release from the Manistique Department of Public Safety, personnel responded at 6:59 a.m. to 1313 N. Scharstrom Road, residence of Craig Herbst, who was at home with his wife when the fire began.

Central Dispatch reported a two-stall garage that was very close to the residence was fully involved with fire and that the garage contained a motor vehicle.

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly contained the blaze within the garage and protected the house which suffered minimal heat damage on the siding.

The garage, vehicle inside, snow machine, a four-wheel off-road vehicle and all contents inside were heavily damaged and are considered a total loss. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

Officers remained on scene for several hours, putting out hot spots and venting the garage from smoke.

The suspected cause of the fire is electrical but the cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation.
