1 killed in head-on collision on M-26

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP — A 21-year-old Chassell resident was killed Monday from injuries sustained in a head-on traffic collision on M-26 near Coal Dock Road, according to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim was the driver of a 2002 Honda Accord that hit a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 63-year-old male from Dollar Bay. The victim and a 21-year-old female passenger “were ejected from the vehicle and sustained significant injuries,” according to police.

The two were first taken to Aspirus Keweenaw hospital in Laurium, then later flown to Aspirus Wausau hospital, where the driver was died due to his extensive injuries, police said.

The condition of the passenger was unknown as of 5 p.m. on Monday.

As of Monday evening, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department was not reporting the identities of any of the people involved, and the accident remains under investigation.
