Girl saved after going through ice

GLADSTONE – An 11-year-old Gladstone girl was saved after falling though the ice at the Gladstone Yacht Harbor Saturday, thanks to the quick thinking of her friends and passersby, according to Gladstone Public Safety.

The girl was with a group of friends at 3:13 p.m. when she fell through the harbor’s ice and into the water. Her friends ran for help and began knocking on doors on the 1000 block of Lake Shore Drive. A 54-year-old homeowner answered the door, and upon learning that the girl had fallen through the ice, he called 911 and ran to the harbor to help.

A 62-year-old passing motorist from Brampton noticed the girl’s panicked friends as she traveled along Lake Shore Drive. She stopped to ask what was going on. When the friends explained the situation, she immediately drove into the harbor’s parking lot.

Once at the scene, the motorist saw the girl in the water trying to hold onto the dock. The motorist was able to grab onto the girl and hold her until more help arrived and the girl could be lifted out of the water.

Rampart EMS responded to the scene and completed a medical evaluation of the girl. She was released into her mother’s care.

Also assisting at the scene were the Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department and the Michigan State Police.
