HOUGHTON — Winning the Class B regional prep basketball tournament has been their goal since the beginning of the season, and coach Mike Forgette’s Gwinn Model Towners accomplished just that Saturday night with and 89-56 victory over Petoskey in Houghton Lake. With the victory, Gwinn advances to the Class B state quarterfinals in Mount Pleasant, where the Model Towners will play Saginaw-Buena Vista. Jason Keefer paced Gwinn, now 19-6, with 30 points, including four 3-pointers. Rob Link added 26 points and Jay Peterson netted 12, though he got into foul trouble and had to be relieved by Archie Sherbinow. Both teams were tied at 19-all at the end of the first quarter, but Gwinn took over from there and never looked back. “We had outstanding team play tonight,” coach Forgette said.

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan college has received a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Max Reynolds Jr., Marquette, to help finance improvements in the instructional program at Northern. Dr. Edgar L. Harden, president of Northern, expressed the college’s “sincere appreciation for this assistance and encouragement to higher education in general and Northern Michigan College in particular.” The funds, to be provided over a period of four years, will be administered locally for various means of enriching the instruction of NMC students, Dr. Harden said. The money will enable faculty members to carry on further study, to attend conferences and workshops they otherwise would miss and will stimulate other activities to raise the level of instruction, he added. “Gifts such as this from members of our community indicate a desire and a willingness to support higher education, which today is the concern of everyone.”
