MARQUETTE — A $3.2 million funding plan to renovate the city’s historic Heritage Hotel is finally in place, according to Marquette city planner Dan Smith. Greyhound Financial Corp. of Phoenix, Ariz., has agreed to purchase $2 million in bonds to underwrite the renovation, Smith said, rounding out the United Development Corp.’s financial scheme to reopen the hotel. Smith said the many grant, loan and legal documents are expected to be completed by March, although bidding will start sooner. The city was awarded a $725,000 federal Urban Development Action Grant to be loaned to United Development. Another Michigan Small Cities grant will also be loaned to United Development. United Development proposes immense renovation of the hotel on North Front Street, once a landmark where Marquette’s rich and famous met. The hotel later fell on hard times, and was closed after bank foreclosure in 1982. United Development plans complete renovation of the interior, including remodeling to produce 52 suites. Extensive exterior work is also planned.

NEGAUNEE — An opportunity to see the old year out and the new year in under enjoyable circumstances is offered patrons of the annual Alumni ball and card party to be held tonight in the high school building. The party is being given under auspices of the Negaunee Alumni association for the benefit of the Steel memorial scholarship fund of Negaunee High School. Patrons who desire to spend the evening in the school building but who do not care to dance may arrange to play cards at the 25-30 tables, which will be provided in the domestic science rooms on the first floor. Card playing will commence at 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served to those playing cards, but not to dancers. A special musical program is to be furnished by Leonard Dote’s Musical Mountaineers, a nine-piece orchestra from Iron Mountain.
