MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University men’s basketball coach Dean Ellis, concentrated on instructing a group of basketball players during the recently-completed NMU Boys’ Summer Basketball School through the Great Lakes Sports Training Center. A total of 118 players participated, including Andy Evans and Erik Schmeltz of Negaunee who were seen practicing one-on-one guarding drills. Other participants from the area were Brian Darti of Limestone, Glenn Hunt of Marquette, David Dellangelo of Negaunee, Brandon Lawson of Ishpeming, Jamie Bennett of Republic, and Beau Forgette of Gwinn.

NEGAUNEE — Finnish residents of Marquette County will attend the 29th annual Midsummer celebration sponsored by the Kaleva Pirtti, which is scheduled to be held at Three Lakes. The Midsummer Day address will be given by the Rev. A.M. Karjala, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee. The program will include a poem by Mrs. Sylvia Heikkinen, selections by the Negaunee ladies’ chorus, a violin solo by Barbara Ross and group singing of the Finnish and American National Anthems.
