ISHPEMING — The Western Marquette County Food Coalition Food Bank recently got a shipment of food in individual packages of familiar brand names rather than in bulk quantities. The food had flawed packaging and usually would have been thrown away by manufacturers. They donated it to food banks and wrote it off as tax donations. Karen Uhlich, director of the Food Bank Council of Michigan said the council really tries to work with private industry. Ed O’Brien of the local food coalition agreed that a statewide partnership is valuable to get food shipped all the way to the U.P. Last year the coalition, which covers western Marquette County, provided food to 73,230 people. The coalition consists of five groups that distribute food equally — the Salvation Army, the Good Samaritan s and the Society of St. Vincent DePaul in Negaunee, Ishpeming and Republic.
