WITCH LAKE — Dale Phelps of Marquette recently had a good day on Squaw Lake west of the village of Witch Lake in southwestern Marquette County, pulling in several nice splake. Ice fishing pressure has been low lately, mainly because of the frigid temperatures across Superiorland. The fishing success rate has been a little lower than most people would like. Lake Independence at Big Bay will be full of anglers this weekend whether the fish are biting or not, with the eighth annual Lake Independence Fishing Derby Saturday and Sunday.

ISHPEMING — Two candidates for the office of city treasurer on the Republican ticket have announced themselves, and their relatives and friends have been doing considerable work among local politicians in order to have their support at the caucuses. Mrs. Richard Abbott, Vine street, is the first candidate to declare she will seek the office. She was born and reared here, and has four small children. Edwin H. Davis, North pine street, is the second to enter the race. He has been a resident of Ishpeming for 48 years, working most of the time in the mines, but for several years has been incapacitated. The present treasurer is Mrs. Fred Parks, who was named several weeks ago by the council, following the death of her husband, who was elected to the office.
