MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Commission on Aging recently elected the following officers for its board in 1988: Sybellia Barsch of Marquette Township, chairwoman; Hugh Kahler of Chocolay Township, vice chairman; Susan Koch of Negaunee, secretary; Lois Paquet of Marquette, treasurer; and William Hampton of Champion, deputy treasurer. The commission board also recognized Leonard Santti of Ishpeming Township for his long service to the commission, presenting him a letter and certificate of appreciation.

90 years ago

GWINN — The Gwinn high school basketball team won 28 to 18, on its home floor Friday night, defeating the strong John D. Pierce quintet of Marquette, conquerors of the National Mine’s high scorers in two contests. Gwinn’s attack was led by Wilson, center man, who counted 15 points, followed closely by Carlson, with eight, who was tied with the Pierce cagers’ leading scorer, Pompo. The line-up for John D. Pierce included: Ryoti, 3, Koski, 2, and Briggman, forwards; Dubois, 3, center; Pompo, 8, Hill, 2, and McClintock, guards. Gwinn’s line-up was: Carlson, 3, and St. Andre, 3, forwards; Wilson, 15, center; Engman and Pizziall, 2, guards.
