ISHPEMING — Entering his 23rd year of sports broadcasting, Jim Pinar has ample sports memories to reflect back on a distinguished career in radio. Pinar, the voice of Northern Michigan University football and basketball Wildcats on WJPD-FM of Ishpeming, dreamed of a career in sports broadcasting in early childhood. In 1964, while teaching at Gladstone High School, Pinar began working weekends at radio station WDBC out of Escanaba to “make a few extra bucks.” He’s been in the business ever since. A native of Escanaba, Pinar was an assistant varsity football coach at Holy Name High School, as well as freshmen boys’ basketball coach. “When I quit coaching, broadcasting was a way to stay affiliated with sports.”
