EAST LANSING — Seven years ago, the People’s Republic of China made Sylvan Wittwer an offer: tell us how America goes about feeding the world, and we’ll show you how we feed a billion people.

They told Wittwer, a noted Michigan State University agricultural researcher, he could go anywhere, explore anything. The nation’s top agricultural experts would be his guides. As it turned out they also become co-authors of “Feeding a Billion,” a 462-page book that details the intricate farming systems developed by the Chinese.

ISHPEMING — William Ninnis, one of Ishpeming’s leading gardeners, who has for a number of years been one of the prize winners in the garden contests conducted by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. among its employees, has been successful this year in raising a fine crop of Spanish saffron, and he believes that it is the first time that it has ever been produced in the Upper Peninsula.
