NEWBERRY — The city of Newberry was selected by the Federal Communications Commission to be the site of a new FM radio station. Anyone interested in owning the station must submit an application to the FCC by Nov. 13. Ownership preference will be given to local residents and no broadcast experience is required, officials said. The selection of Newberry is part of an expansion in the number of FM frequencies nationwide. The Newberry station would operate on the frequency of 97.9 and would have the ability to broadcast 24 hours a day in stereo. The station’s coverage area will be determined by the antenna tower height and transmitting power of the new licensee.
