MARQUETTE — Local bicycle motocross (BMX) racers turned out in good numbers again here Friday and Saturday for competition. North State BMX, Inc. president, Paul Churchville, said around 125 racers turned out during the weekend to race. Three racers — Maxwell Vandette, Mat Thornton and Dan Schrei — advanced from the Novice to Intermediate divisions within their respective age classes by winning their third race within their birthday year. This week, practice registration will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday. Registration will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, with racing to follow at 7. Saturday’s registration will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the racing slated for 1 p.m. In addition to the practice Thursday evening, the Quick Stop Bike Shop will conduct a practice from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings for the remainder of the season.

ISHPEMING — Gust Johnson will leave Wednesday on a two and a half month trip to his former home in Sweden and other places in Europe. Mr. Johnson will be accompanied by his brother, Aron, chief of police in Marquette. They came to the United States together 25 years ago and this will be their first visit to their old home. Chief Johnson will leave Marquette Sunday for a convention in Windsor, Ont., and will meet his brother in Detroit, going from there to New York to sail Saturday on the Swedish-American liner Grispholm. Gust Johnson will meet his daughter Miss Jeanette, a freshman at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor and she will spend the day with him in Detroit. The Johnsons will visit their mother who is 77 years old and has not been in good health for several months. They also have a sister and brother in Sweden with whom they will spend time.
