ISHPEMING — Scout Melvin Berg, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Berg, has received a check for $100 from the Junior First Aid Legion, sponsored by Bauer & Black of Chicago, manufacturers of first aid supplies. In May 1926, Scout Berg, accompanied a number of his Scout comrades on a hike north of the city. During the day a stone was dislodged near the top of a cliff that struck Scout Garnet Jose and inflicted a deep gash in his head. Berg, who carried a first aid kit, immediately bound up the wound and stopped the flow of blood. The application of a gauze bandage permitted the injured Scout to be removed to the Ishpeming hospital where he was placed under the care of a doctor, who pronounced the first aid treatment a decided help to the patient. Scout Berg also will be presented with an honor medal of bronze for his success in administering first aid.
