MARQUETTE — With a bit of old-fashioned ingenuity and some new-fangled technology, a colossal job was reduced to a lesser task recently at the Marquette County Courthouse. The change came in the tabulating of ballots from precincts around the county during the recent general election, with a county-designed computer program trimming time from the process.

Although only 42 percent of the county’s registered voters participated in the election, more than 18,000 ballots had to be counted and tabulated. However, clerk staff members say they weren’t really apprehensive about using the new system. “If we had a problem, we still had our manual system to fall back on,” Margaret O’Neill, deputy county clerk, said.
