Negaunee City Council to consider ordinance
NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Council will hold a public hearing at during its meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Negaunee Senior Center to answer questions and receive comments about the city’s proposed property maintenance code and ordinance.
Following the public hearing, the council will consider the second reading of the proposed ordinance, which focusses on blight resolution of commercial buildings downtown as well as residential rental properties within the city. The first reading of the ordinance was approved by the council at its Nov. 8 meeting.
The code, if adopted, would establish a five-member diversionary team appointed by the Mayor and consisting of two citizens at large, two citizens who owns or operates a business and one citizen with building knowledge or expertise to work collaboratively with the city and building owners to resolve violations of the code “in lieu of citation/prosecution of the violations.”
Members of the council, who will led for the first time by newly-elected mayor David Kangas and joined by new councilor Edward Karki, will also consider several new-business items during the meeting.
Agenda items include a first reading of proposed amendments to the city’s electrical ordinance as well as a fee schedule amendment related to commercial electric rates; an electric distribution system engineering study proposal; the possible hiring of Beckett and Raider at a cost of $8,420 to work on Tax Increment Finance plan as well as a development plan with the newly-reinstated Downtown Development Authority; and the adoption of a strategic plan for the Negaunee Public Library.
Under unfinished business, the council will consider a union contract with supervisory and non-supervisory employees as well as a change order related to the upcoming Jackson Mine Park pavilion project.
