LWV backs voter registration

MARQUETTE — The local League of Women Voters Marquette County Unit plans to register young voters throughout the area to celebrate the “national holiday.”

According to a release from the LWV, on Tuesday, Americans will celebrate National Voter Registration Day with a massive 50-state effort to register voters before Election Day this November. With midterms and governor races happening in November, every eligible American voter should exercise his or her right to be heard at the ballot box this year and next. National Voter Registration Day is the right place to start by getting registered.

That is why communities across the country are planning to use National Voter Registration Day to increase voter participation.

The League of Women Voters of Delta County, Marquette County Unit is a National Voter Registration Day partner.

On Tuesday, League Volunteers will partner with five schools throughout the county to talk with students about the importance of voting and to help eligible students fill out the application to vote. As a nonpartisan “holiday” for democracy, National Voter Registration Day counts on thousands of partners and volunteers across the political spectrum.

“We have a wonderful group of committed volunteers in Marquette County who will be sharing their time throughout the day with students in Republic-Michigamme, Ishpeming, Negaunee, the Gwinn Area Community Schools and NICE Community Schools,” said Darlene Allen, Unit Leader of the Marquette County League, in the release.

The goal for the 2018 National Voter Registration Day is to increase participation by encouraging Americans to register to vote and come out to the polls this November.

“National Voter Registration Day is a positive way for our volunteers to celebrate democracy with young voters throughout the county” said Allen.

National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right — the right to vote.
