Crews to conduct lamprey work

MARQUETTE — A crew from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service/Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada is to conduct work on the Dead and Chocolay rivers through Aug. 21-29 to estimate the abundance of lampreys in the rivers. The information gathered will be used to determine the need for sea lamprey control.

The same type of work also is to be performed Aug. 21-29 on the Cranberry River and Anna Creek in Alger County.

USFWS personnel will apply lampricides to the Carp River to kill sea lamprey larvae burrowed in the stream bottom Aug. 21-29. Applications will be completed in about seven days. Application dates are tentative and may be changed based upon local weather or stream conditions.

Sea lampreys invaded the Great Lakes in the 1920s and have been a permanent, destructive element of the fishery ever since. The average sea lamprey will destroy up to 40 pounds of fish during its parasitic phase.
