‘Philling’ in for Phil

MARQUETTE — Before Phil Niemisto passed away, Select Realty agents and staff committed to help him wash windows on his downtown route while he was recovering. Thus, “Philling in for Phil” became the slogan to invite others to “Phil in.”

Any money earned from “Philling in” is donated to the Phil Scholarship, a scholarship recently established in Niemisto’s name for those studying entrepreneurship, according to a news release from Select Realty.

“We encourage others to help out on a weekly or monthly basis to raise funds for the Phil Scholarship,” the release states. “For more information, contact us. Join us as part of Spread Goodness Day on March 9. Complete an act of goodness by picking up trash, putting coins in (parking) meters or simply wearing a smile.”

Erica and Andy Smith, owners of The Gathered Earth Gift Shop, will be taking over maintenance of the downtown pocket park, named after and formerly tended by Niemisto, according to the release. To offer help with the pocket park, contact the Smiths through their website, www.thegatheredearth.com.

Select Realty is dedicated to serving the local community, according to the release.

“As a locally owned company, we understand the importance of giving back,” the release states. “Phil was an exemplary citizen with unsurpassed character. He’s built a legacy on kindheartedness and genuineness. Let’s continue that legacy.”
