Meth production causes fire

MARQUETTE — A structure fire, believed by investigators to be caused by the production of methamphetamine inside of the structure, was reported around 6 p.m. Wednesday at 55 East Riling St. Lot 27 in Gwinn.

When officers arrived, they discovered that a male subject, identified as Brad Michael Overly, 31, of Gwinn was trying to drive away from the residence, and it was quickly determined that there were no occupants inside the residence.

The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team was called to the scene. An investigation revealed evidence of methamphetamine production occurred inside the residence upon the day of the fire. Evidence of past methamphetamine production was also found, according to a press release from the Forsyth Township Police Department.

Overly was taken into custody by police. After a report was submitted to the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office, charges were authorized against Overly for controlled substance — operating/maintaining laboratory involving methamphetamine, a 20-year felony. Overly has been lodged at the Marquette County Jail.
