MARQUETTE — The family of the late Mike Van Straten, a Negaunee City Council member and former police officer who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year, recently made a financial contribution to the Marquette County Shop with a Cop program.

The 10th annual Shop with a Cop will take place Dec. 1. It’s a collaborate event sponsored by the Marquette County Department of Health and Human Services, the Marquette County Law Enforcement Administrator’s Association and Radio Results Network. The program serves 50 at-risk children each year, pairing them with an officer from 13 participating law enforcement divisions, and provides them with a $100 Walmart gift card they can use to shop for holiday gifts.

Mike Van Straten’s wife, Donna, wrote in a letter that the family was honored to present the memorial contribution to the program.

“Mike retired from Negaunee city police in 2007, serving 30 years,” the letter states. “His passion was in his work and he continued in the law enforcement field after retirement as well as contributing to his community through his efforts on the Negaunee City Council, 911 Emergency Management Board and the Negaunee Elks. Mike loved children — that is why Shop with a Cop is a perfect way to honor him. Knowing the smiles that this contribution will bring to children through the help of local law enforcement is heart-warming.”

Donations to Shop with a Cop can be sent to Marquette County DHHS, c/o “Shop with a Cop,” 234 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.
