MCHD offering radon test kits

MARQUETTE — With January noted as National Radon Action Month, the Marquette County Health Department is offering free short-term radon test kits through Jan. 31.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimates that exposure to radon, which is a tasteless, odorless, colorless gas that typically enters homes through the building’s foundation, is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

Heating during the winter months can increase the level of radon in people’s homes, making January a good time to test for radon, according to a Marquette County Health Department press release.

Test kits are available at the Environmental Health Division office, located at 184 U.S. 41 East, Negaunee.

Radon test kits are also available for purchase at local hardware stores, home improvement centers or directly from a laboratory. For more information, contact the health department at 906-475-4195, or the state of Michigan Radon Program at 1-800-RADON-GAS.
