MARQUETTE — The fifth-annual Trim a Tree fundraiser for the Marquette-Alger Special Olympics takes place from 5 to 7 tonight at the Marquette Holiday Inn. Serving as this year’s honorary chairpersons for Special Olympics are Dr. James Appleberry, president of Northern Michigan University, and his wife, Pat. Special Olympians Mark Lucier and Paul Kloninger will also be on hand to help decorate. During tonight’s public reception, admission is with a $5 donation and guests receive nametags which are used to decorate the Special Olympics Christmas tree as the guests depart. A brief program will take place at 6 p.m. and a visit from Santa is expected during the reception as well. Winter Special Olympics corporate sponsor, H.C. Prange Co., is selling Snowball stuffed dogs at their stores during the holidays, with $1 from each Snowball sold going to the program.

60 years ago

PALMER — Cooperation of Palmer residents will be sought next week to insure the success of a project scheduled by Boy Scout Troop 319, assistant Scoutmaster Levi Etelmaki announced. Palmer residents are requested to save empty milk cartons of any size for the upcoming week. These carton will be collected on Dec. 7 by members of the Palmer Scout troop. The Purpose of the project is to provide gas stations in the area with sand-filled cartons for distribution to motorists who may become stuck in snow or on ice this winter. Troop 319, led by Scoutmaster David LaChance, has a membership of 25.
