NEGAUNEE — Excitement over Negaunee High School’s gridiron success has gone past the city limits, bridging even the void that separates cross-town rivals. The Westwood High School Booster Club, which traditionally backs the efforts of its Ishpeming team, treated the Negaunee Miners to pop after the Miners trounced their opponents in the Class C quarterfinals Saturday. “It’s heartwarming to know the U.P.’s behind you,” said Negaunee coach Dick Koski, whose team — ears still ringing with chants of “U.P. Power” — advances to semifinal playoffs this weekend after defeating Traverse City St. Francis High School in St. Ignace 33-8, raising its record to 11-0.

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s County Draft Board has been advised by Michigan Selective Service headquarters in Lansing that there will be no induction or pre-induction calls for December. This will mark the first time since the draft was put into effect in 1940 that the county board will not have to induct any registrants during December, according to Mrs. Francis Drake, clerk in charge of the board’s office.
