MARQUETTE — Marquette and Northern Michigan University have been given a boost in their hopes to host the second annual Great Lakes State Games next summer. A recommendation has been made to Gov. James Blanchard that the games be conducted in Marquette again in 1988. The Great Lakes Sports Commission unanimously approved the recommendation earlier this week in Lansing.

60 years ago

ISHPEMING — Several reports have been received of vandalism on federally-owned postal equipment, the Ishpeming Police Department reports. Plates stating the hours of collection have been removed and damaged, Postmaster Carl Corneliuson told police. This property is owned by the United States Government and destruction of it, which can be investigated by the FBI, constitutes a federal offense. Police are taking steps to apprehend anyone who destroys such equipment, Chief Swanson said.
