Pedestrian struck by vehicle, driver cited

MARQUETTE — A 20-year-old Marquette woman was hit by a vehicle while crossing Presque Isle Avenue in Marquette Wednesday afternoon, according to the Marquette Police Department.

Marquette police were dispatched at 3:45 p.m. to Presque Isle Avenue near Norwood Street.

A group of four women were crossing south of the intersection when an eastbound 1999 Chevrolet Tracker, driven by 24-year-old Lindsay Niemisto of Negaunee, struck one of the pedestrians, police said.

Cassandra Schnicke, 20, of Marquette was transported by EMS to UP Health System-Marquette for what was suspected to be minor injuries, said Detective Capt. Mike Kohler.

Her condition is not known as hospital officials could not be reached by press time.

Niemisto was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Kohler said no alcohol or drugs were believed to be factors in the accident, nor was speed.

“It’s probably fair to say that it appears as though the driver was not paying attention, … but there’s nothing to suggest she was texting or anything,” Kohler said.

The area was not designated for pedestrian crossing, and there is construction in that area, Kohler added.
