Streets closed for NMU parade

MARQUETTE — Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Northern Michigan University will be holding its annual homecoming parade.

The following streets will be closed to through traffic for the parade:

Pine Street from Lakeshore Boulevard to Fair Avenue; Fair from Pine to Third Street; Third from Fair to Hewitt Avenue; Hewitt from Third to Front Street; and Front from Hewitt to Fair.

The streets will be re-opened at 7 p.m.


Green garbage bags delivered

MARQUETTE — The city of Marquette solid waste hauler received green city garbage bags from their supplier on Wednesday. Delivery to retailers will be conducted immediately.


Alzheimer’s walk Saturday

MARQUETTE — The Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Michigan Chapter will host its annual Marquette “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” Saturday at Jacobetti Complex at Northern Michigan University, 2296 Sugar Loaf Ave.

Registration for the walk will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. ceremony and 10:30 a.m. start.

More than 600 communities nationwide participate in “Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” which is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Registration is required for all attending and, while there is no participation fee, those involved are encouraged to fundraise for the organization and bring attention to the cause.

The event also will feature family-friendly activities and entertainment.

Participants who have raised more than $100 will receive a T-shirt and, on walk day, all registrants will receive a wristband with a Promise Garden flower. Flowers come in four colors to represent the individual’s connection to the disease: blue for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia, purple for someone who has lost a loved one to the disease, yellow for supporters and caregivers and orange for anyone who supports the cause and vision of a world without Alzheimer’s.

To donate, visit act.alz.org/walk, select a location then chose an individual or team to support, or the cause in general.

All contributions are tax deductible. A $25 donation from event participants and attendees is suggested.

Barring severe weather, the event will take place rain or shine.

The city of Marquette released the following information regarding the walk: The walk will start at the Northern Michigan University Jacobetti Complex, then cross Hawley Street at the multi-use path before proceeding to Presque Isle and returning along the same route.

The walk is to occur exclusively on the multi-use path and participants are to follow the rules of the road, however the public is asked to be aware of and be considerate toward people crossing the street.


Masons Week declared

MARQUETTE — Michigan Masonic Lodges across the state will begin performing various community outreach activities in their area during the week of Sept. 23.

The Michigan Senate held a Proclamation Ceremony at the State Capital in honor of the week, according to a press release from the Michigan Masons.

Lodges across Michigan will be taking part in service and awareness activities that demonstrate the Masons’ commitment to its communities. Activities include an open house and car show in Ann Arbor, archery contest in Milford, and numerous dinners and child identification programs to help local youth.

Michigan State Sen. Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge), a Mason himself, applauds the passage of this resolution designating Michigan Masons Week.

“I am pleased to sponsor Senate Resolution 79 for the Michigan Masons,” Jones said. “The Masons provide wonderful volunteer services to the people of Michigan. They are very important to any community service.”

“Freemasonry has been a pillar supporting communities in Michigan since its time as a provincial territory. We are honored by this recognition and welcome the opportunity to improve humankind and the world we live in,” said Masons Grand Master Joshua Woodwyk in the release.
