ISHPEMING — Thoughts of winter surfaced in Ishpeming this week when the city council unanimously agreed to rebuild a high-speed toboggan slide at the Al Quaal Recreation Area. The 1,500-foot slide, in a state of disrepair since the late 1970s, will be reconstructed at a cost of about $3,500. “The toboggan slide, when it as operating, was the only one of its kind in Marquette County, but the cost of keeping it up was just too much,” said Norm Andrews, a member of the Ishpeming Parks and Recreation Commission. Richard Burke, parks and recreation director, said the slide, first installed in the late 1930s, is in need of constant maintenance. “The community endorsed and supported the slide all along,” said Councilman Lee Guizzetti.

The Raish Oil Co. Inc., began operations last week as the distributor to 16 outlets in Marquette County, combining the seven outlets formerly served by Raish with nine Socony Mobil dealers. Owner George Raish is taking over the existing Soceny Mobil facilities at 717 W. Washington St. in addition to a storage plant on South Front Street. Two drivers who formerly worked for Socony, Joe DePetro and G.I. Sole, remain with Raish, along with Louis Raish who was with George Raish before the merger.
