Flash flood watch in effect for western U.P.

MARQUETTE — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for a portion of the western Upper Peninsula, including Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, through Thursday afternoon.

Periods of heavy rain are expected through tonight with the heaviest rainfall expected to occur late this afternoon and tonight.

With wet soil conditions, heavy rainfall from thunderstorms could lead to flash flooding of streams and low-lying areas, the NWS reports.

Larger rivers will likely experience significant rises in water levels as well over the next few days.

Total rainfall amounts from today into Thursday morning should exceed 2 inches and could approach 3 inches at some locations, according to the report.

Residents and travelers are advised to monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
