Bills to contain milkweed seeds

MARQUETTE — The city of Marquette’s utility bill mailings in March and April will contain packets of Common Milkweed seeds for planting by city residents. The packets, provided by the Superior Watershed Partnership, include a card with easy to follow planting instructions.

Area residents who don’t receive the mailing can pick up seed packets at the Superior Watershed Partnership office, located in Presque Isle Park at 2 Peter White Drive. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seed packets will be available throughout the month of April.

Since 1999, the Superior Watershed Partnership has worked to enhance and restore important pollinator habitat area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These nationally recognized efforts have benefitted critical feeding, resting, and migratory staging sites utilized by the globally threatened Monarch Butterfly during migration. The SWP’s goal is to distribute more than one million milkweed plants and seeds. City of Marquette residents can help make Marquette the most monarch-friendly Great Lakes city by following the instructions to start plants indoors or sow seeds outdoors.
