3-car crash injures 2 cops, 1 teen

MARQUETTE — Three people were injured, including two Michigan State Police troopers, in a three-vehicle accident Tuesday night on U.S. 41 in Negaunee Township.

The crash happened at about 10:48 p.m. near Pond Road, according to a press release from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, the primary responding agency.

The MSP patrol vehicle, with its emergency lights activated, was stationary in the inside lane of traffic providing traffic control for a previous car accident.

A 2009 Chevy Malibu driven by Trevor Jack Witty, 19, of Munising, was in the process of passing a third vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Charger, when Witty lost control, struck the Charger, then careened into the state police vehicle.

Both troopers as well as Witty were taken to UP Health Systems-Marquette by ambulance for medical evaluation due to complaints of neck and leg pain.

All three were treated and released, the sheriff’s office reported this morning.

Witty was cited for violation of the basic speed law and failure to exercise due caution when approaching an emergency vehicle.
