Negaunee City Council to address open seat tonight

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Council will consider whether to accept the resignation of a council member and determine how to fill the seat at its meeting at 7 tonight at the Negaunee Senior Center.

Martin Saari submitted his resignation via email to the council Nov. 19, citing personal reasons. Saari had completed 11 months of his council term, which expires Nov. 30, 2018.

According to an agenda supplement, the council has two options to fill the vacancy.

Per the city charter the council can appoint an individual to fill the vacancy until the next regular election, or a special election can be held to fill the seat.

“A special election could run about $6,000, and there is no budget provision for this,” the agenda supplement states.

If the appointment option is accepted by the council, the vacancy should be advertised in the newspaper and on the city website with applications due Jan. 5. resulting in an appointment at the Jan. 12 regular council meeting.

The council also will welcome new members Jim Kantola and Bill Anderson who were elected Nov. 8.

Council member Don Gladwell will take his position as mayor, replacing Dawn Schuhknecht.

The council will also consider several city board and commission appointments, as well as county board appointments at the meeting.
