Auction of surplus land underway

LANSING — A sealed-bid auction of surplus state-owned land gets underway today.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the sale will continue until Jan. 10. The auction will feature 58 parcels located primarily in the central and northern Lower Peninsula and in the Upper Peninsula.

Properties range in size from less than an acre to 77 acres.

They are isolated from other public lands that the DNR manages. The agency says some are difficult to oversee and provide little public recreation benefit. Several are forested and have riverside or lake frontage that officials say makes them better suited for private ownership.

Minimum bid prices, property descriptions and other information is available at http://www.michigan.gov/landforsale .

Proceeds from the sales will help provide more outdoor recreation opportunities.
