Vehicle-pedestrian crash kills Schoolcraft County woman

MANISTIQUE – Police in Schoolcraft County are continuing to investigate a vehicle-pedestrian crash which resulted in the death of a 51-year-old Manistique woman Saturday afternoon on U.S. 2 in Manistique Township.

Michigan State Police troopers from the St. Ignace post identified the woman as Leigh Peterson of Manistique. Police said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident was reported at 2:55 p.m. and occurred near Walters Road, just east of Manistique, in Manistique Township.

Police said Peterson was struck in traffic by a vehicle driven by a 49-year-old Cornell man, who was not identified by police. Traffic was shut down on U.S. 2. Responders cleared the scene and the highway was reopened to traffic at 8:15 p.m.

Additional entities assisting state police at the scene included the Manistique Public Safety Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Police Department, Michigan Department of Transportation, the Manistique Department of Public Works and off-duty Schoolcraft County sheriff’s deputies.
