MARQUETTE — To celebrate the holidays, productions of The Nutcracker Ballet will take place at the Kaufman Auditorium at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today.

The cast of the play, put on by the Kaufman Auditorium and Second Skin Shop, is comprised of community members from Alger and Marquette counties, explained state Rep. Sara Cambensy, who plays Mother Ginger in The Nutcracker and is the former director of the Kaufman Auditorium.

Cambensy and other cast members of The Nutcracker Ballet performed Act 2 of the play during their dress rehearsal Friday evening.

“Having been the previous director, I did a good job of never being on stage, so being able to come back and work with the kids, especially the youngest ones is going to be the highlight of volunteering to do this performance,” Cambensy said.

She encouraged community members to attend the production of the traditional tale this weekend.

“It helps support local artists,” she said. “A lot of them put a lot of time into this — choreographing, making sure that the dancers come together, making sure that they have a beautiful place to perform. It supports our public schools, it supports the auditorium and it brings people together.”

Advance tickets are $9 for youth and $15 for adults. Tickets will be an additional $2 at the door. To purchase tickets visit any NMU EZ Ticket Outlet.
