One cited, no injuries after logging truck loses load on CR 550, strikes vehicle

MARQUETTE — A pickup truck was damaged after a logging truck lost its load on Marquette County Road 550 near Eagle Nest Road around 3 p.m. Monday, according to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

One citation was issued in the accident, but no injuries were reported.

The logging truck, owned by McInerney Logging Co. and driven by Corey McInerney, 22, of Escanaba, was southbound when a load chain malfunctioned causing logs on the truck’s pup trailer to spill into the roadway.

The driver of the northbound pickup truck, Randall Bullock, 49, of Big Bay, had noticed the logging truck was leaning and beginning to lose its load.

Bullock locked up his brakes, but was unable to avoid the falling logs, driving over some, with additional logs striking the front of his vehicle, police said.

While Bullock was not injured, his truck sustained “substantial damage” and was towed from the scene, according to police.

McInerney was able to stop the logging truck after he noticed logs had been spilled and returned to the scene of the accident to load the lost logs back onto the trailer.

McInerney was issued a traffic citation for an insecure load, according to the release.

County Road 550 was temporarily reduced to one lane of travel for around an hour while the scene was investigated and cleaned up by responders, police said.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Marquette Township Fire Department.

The accident remains under investigation at this time, police said.
