Perkins Park hosts inaugural Harvest Fest

MARQUETTE — For those who are looking to celebrate the arrival of fall in a new way, Marquette County’s Perkins Park in Big Bay is hosting its inaugural Harvest Fest this weekend.

Harvest Fest will be a great way to “get in the spirit of all” for the autumn season, said Lauren Luce, senior planner for Marquette County’s Recreation, Planning, Community Development and Forestry Division.

The event, which runs through Sunday, will offer campsite decorating and costume contests, a photo booth, a bounce house, trick-or-treating and more.

Today, a full schedule of activities is planned, with pumpkin carving beginning at 11 a.m.

“We have a bunch of pumpkins, over 60 pumpkins,” Luce said. “You can bring your own or carve one that’s there.”

Games, a bounce house, a photo booth and refreshments will be offered throughout the day, she said.

A costume contest will be held at 6 p.m., with trick-or-treating taking place from 6:30-8 p.m. Organizers noted the park road will close at 5:30 p.m. today and attendees are encouraged to plan accordingly.

Luce said the community is welcome to attend today’s events and the $2 use fee will be waived.

“We hope people from the community and the surrounding area join us for the trick-or-treating and the events, even if you’re not camping,” she said.

Those who camp at Perkins Park will have an opportunity to enter into a campsite decoration contest, which will be judged by a vote, with awards delivered Sunday, she said.

On Sunday, the event will wind down, giving campers a chance to enjoy cider and doughnuts with the campground host, as well as receive their awards from the campsite decoration contest, Luce said.

Luce said she looks forward to Harvest Fest and feels it will be a great way to spread awareness about the beauty of county-operated Perkins Park and the things the Big Bay community has to offer.
