Defendant in assault case set for trial

Robert Boss

MARQUETTE — Robert Boss, the former football coach at Finlandia and Northern Michigan universities who was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault-domestic violence in April, has been scheduled for a jury trial on Oct. 26 in 96th District Court.

Boss, 34, of Baraga had entered a not guilty plea after his arraignment in district court was waived on April 23. He is scheduled for a final pretrial conference on Sept. 17, according to court documents.

The aggravated assault-domestic violence charge against Boss stems from an August 2016 incident, court documents state.

Boss was separated from his postion with Finlandia University April 18.

At time of the alleged incident, he was employed as the run-game coordinator/offensive line coach for the NMU Wildcats football team. He was appointed as co-interim head coach for the team in November 2016, a position he held until December of that year.

“The complainant is a former student and the respondent of the complaint is a former employee,” NMU Chief Marketing Officer Derek Hall wrote in an email to The Mining Journal April 21. “NMU has cooperated with local authorities in their concurrent investigation. Northern Michigan University takes sexual harassment and assault complaints seriously by conducting timely and thorough investigations and taking appropriate actions.”

Following Boss’s arrest in April, he was lodged at the Marquette County Jail before being released on a $5,000 bond April 20.
