The New Free Store rummage sale to be held today

HARVEY — The New Free Store on M-28 in Harvey is holding a rummage sale and fundraiser to be able to keep serving local families in need today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are a wide variety of items for sale. There will also be home crafters and vendors.

Six years ago a group of friends wanted to help those in the community who could not afford some of the most basic necessities of living. They decided to host a free rummage sale in the basement of a local church to assist as many people as possible. Over time those in need were able to provide a weekly opportunity to take any of the donated clothing and other items that were available at no charge. The weekly rummage events became known as The Free Store, and the original organizers grew from two to 18 committed volunteers who have kept the store operational.

In 2016, the store moved to its current location at 1420 M-28 E in the Marquette area. It has been renamed The New Free Store and is now a 401c3 non-profit organization.

Today through various forms of fundraising efforts, The New Free Store provides donated clothes, supplemental cleaning and hygiene products such as shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, detergent, toilet paper and other items that are needed at no cost to the registed families and individuals that cannot afford them. Currently, there are over 500 registered shopping families, which total well over a thousand people of all ages who are served in some way by The New Free Store.
