Cause of death remains unknown after autopsy

MARQUETTE — Police said nothing suspicious was found during an autopsy performed Monday by UP Health System-Marquette on the body of the female discovered in a field northwest of the Ishpeming High School football field.

The cause and manner of death have still not been determined at this time, according to a press release from the Ishpeming Police Department.

Authorities said they haven’t yet positively verified the identity of the victim.

“The Ishpeming Police Department believes we know the identity of the victim but are awaiting dental records verification before releasing a name,” the press release states.

The police department has been in contact with the family of the victim since Friday, according to officials.

The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available, police said.

The Ishpeming Police Department requests the public call the department at 906-486-4416 if anyone has information on suspicious activity in the area of the Ishpeming Playgrounds or in the area of West Empire near Lake Bancroft between July 14 and Friday.

The Ishpeming Police Department, in the release, thanked the public for tips that have been called in regarding the incident, as well as the Michigan State Police Crime Lab, the Michigan State Police Aviation Team, deputies from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and a forensic anthropologist from Northern Michigan University who assisted at the scene.
