Smith Construction awarded Bothwell parking project

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education Thursday unanimously awarded Marquette- based Smith Construction Inc, the Bothwell Middle School parking lot project.

The action came at a special school board meeting that was necessary to approve the bid in time for the start of the project.

Smith was the low bidder at $719,700, said Bill Saunders, MAPS superintendent. Oberstar Inc., based in Marquette, submitted a bid of $737,000.

Saunders said the parking lot work is a sinking fund project.

“We are making some big changes to address student safety and congestion,” Saunders said in an email.

He said a second drop-off/pick-up loop will be created. There also will be extensive signage to control traffic flow and expedite vehicle movement.

In addition, a walking path will be developed between loops to increase walker safety, plus the entire Bothwell parking lot site will be repaved, Saunders said.

Work is anticipated to begin June 11 and finish by the second week in August, weather permitting.
