MARQUETTE — The Spaghetti & Sisu: Honoring our friend John Kivela organizing committee reports more than $16,000 was raised at the May 9 event for the John Kivela Legacy Fund.

In a post Monday on its Facebook page, the fund said of the event “John Kivela would have turned 49 today. So it’s a good day to show all the love and laughter he left us by sharing these photos from Spaghetti & Sisu: Honoring our friend John Kivela. Thank you to everyone who has made the launch of the John Kivela Legacy Fund a huge success. It was a team effort that would have made John proud!”

Kivela, a former Marquette mayor and city commissioner, died by suicide one year ago after a lengthy battle with alcoholism.

The fund, administered by Great Lakes Recovery Centers, was launched to honor the late 109th District state representative by working to fight addiction and other mental health issues.
