Marquette Symphony to perform special concert

MARQUETTE — Timed appropriately with Valentine’s Day, the Marquette Symphony Orchestra presents “Music: The Language of Love” on Saturday at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette.

This is the symphony’s annual concert with the winner of the young concerto competition. Dr. Alex Jimenez will be returning to Marquette as a guest conductor.

Jimenez serves as professor of conducting and the director of orchestral activities at the Florida State University, and was the maestro who conducted the symphony’s extremely successful “Shall We Dance?” Pops concert last season. Jimenez is the second of three candidates to become the MSO’s principal conductor.

Youth concerto competition winner Rong Sui will perform Saint-Saens’ “Piano Concerto No. 2.” Sui is a piano major at the University of Michigan.

Also on the concert are Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet Overture,” “Elgar’s Serenade for Strings” and Zwilich’s “Upbeat!”

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Kaufman Auditorium. Tickets are on sale now through NMU ticket outlets.

Tickets prices range from $17 to $32 for adults; $12 for students and $9 for children 12 and under. Availability at the door may be limited.
