VAN STRATEN

NEGAUNEE — Mike Van Straten, a member of the Negaunee City Council, has died.

Councilman Van Straten, 66, died Wednesday morning at his home, according to a notice in The Mining Journal. His death was confirmed by city officials earlier today.

Van Straten served as an officer with the Negaunee Police Department for 30 years, according to biographical information provided to The Mining Journal in November when he ran for his position on the council. He most recently served as a contracted security employee at the federal courthouse building in Marquette.

Van Straten was elected to serve a three-year term during the Nov. 7 election.

The council will discuss how to fill the remainder of Van Straten’s term at its regular meeting in February, officials say.
