Commemorative Bucks step up for area needy
Annual Christmas Cheer Club benefits from organization
MARQUETTE — As holiday merriments approach, The Mining Journal observes generosity from its community members.
On Tuesday a group of people on behalf of the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan, an outdoors organization, dropped off hundreds of presents for the Journal’s 39th annual Cheer Club.
The Cheer Club event is a joint effort between the local newspaper, the Salvation Army and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to provide gifts to local children and families in need for the holiday.
Jim Curtis, CBM regional director for the Upper Peninsula, said the group holds an annual wild game dinner at Northern Michigan University every March that benefits the Cheer Club because members are asked to bring a gift to donate.
“We ask everyone that comes to the banquet to bring in a donation,” he said. “Everyone that donates something gets a raffle ticket for a prize.”
The money raised from the banquet goes toward hunter safety education for kids, Curtis added.
Last year’s Cheer Club supplied thousands of gifts to more than 1,600 Marquette County children.
The Mining Journal would like to remind families they must register by Dec. 8 to qualify for the Salvation Army’s toy shop giveaway that takes place on Dec. 21.
When registering, participants should bring a photo ID, proof of residency and proof of income. If families are regular beneficiaries of the Salvation Army’s food pantry, the organization will not require that information.
St. Vincent de Paul will also hold a toy giveaway at the Westwood Mall on Dec. 21 starting at 9 a.m. According to the Marquette store manager Denise Arbelius, the “retail-like” shop will be located where MC Sports used to be.
The Mining Journal encourages businesses to participate during this season’s Cheer Club by donating toys and other age-appropriate items.
