NMU gets $1.2M in commitments

University participates in #GivingTuesday

ERICKSON

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University participated for the first time in #GivingTuesday, the global day of giving that took place earlier this week.

It was a big success.

The NMU Foundation wasn’t expected to have final totals until later today, but with six hours remaining until the #GivingTuesday midnight deadline, President Fritz Erickson announced $1.2 million in commitments.

Also, the collaborative effort between the Associated Students of Northern Michigan University and NMU Public Safety’s Food4Fines program exceeded their goal of 1,000 items for the recently opened NMU Food Pantry.

In remarks Tuesday night at an event to recognize the efforts of students, faculty, staff and the Marquette community, Erickson thanked everyone for their support in helping NMU “move another step forward in achieving our strategic goals and advancing our strategic initiatives.”

He praised the “high interaction by community members with NMU’s people, facilities, programs and university experiences” and emphasized the importance and impact of private giving to NMU and the community.

Donors made gifts to a wide variety of NMU departments and programs, including $250,000 for faculty support, $160,000 for scholarships, a $100,000 gift for theater and dance, $50,000 for research support and more.

The NMU Board of Trustees, the NMU Foundation Board of Trustees, the Alumni Board of Directors and campus leadership made commitments totaling more than $400,000.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by social media and collaboration.

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season when many people focus on the holidays and end-of-year giving.
