Above, Bev Trynoski, left, of the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club explains specimens to Brenda Albrecht, right, at the Marquette Regional History Center during Saturday’s fifth annual Archaeology Fair, which showcased booths focusing on the unique archaeology of the Upper Peninsula. Below, local archaeologist, historian and author Jim Paquette, right, and volunteer site assistant Josie Thomson, who is an eighth-grader at Negaunee Middle School, explain their discovery of a protohistoric site in Marquette County. At the site they found and documented French trade beads, which they were able to date from 1560-1650 and Jesuit iconographic rings dated 1630-1660. They say the site was a winter camp for early Anishinaabe Native Americans. (Journal photos by Rachel Oakley)
