Marquette County arts groups awarded grants

MARQUETTE — Arts groups in Marquette County will receive grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs for fiscal year 2017-18.

Organizations from around Michigan will share $10.6 million in grants, an increase of 10 percent from last year’s state budget allocations.

“These grants provide vital support for the ongoing cultural development of communities throughout Michigan,” said MCACA Executive Director John Bracey in a news release.

Grants have been awarded to 474 recipients from 56 of the state’s 83 counties. The annual arts grant program attracted 575 applicants from a broad geographical and cultural cross-section of Michigan.

Funds will cover costs associated with operations, projects, capital improvements, arts-in-education residences, services to the field and regional re-granting initiatives.

Marquette County recipients are:

• Marquette Symphony Orchestra, $25,000;

• Superior Arts Youth Theater, $25,000;

• Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum, $30,000;

• Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency, $15,450;

• Liberty Children’s Art Project, $25,000;

• Marquette County Historical Society, $30,000;

• Superior String Alliance Inc., $25,000;

• Lake Superior Theatre Inc., $25,000;

• Marquette City Band Inc., $20,000;

• Marquette Arts and Culture Center, $30,000;

• Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum, $4,149;

• Marquette Maritime Museum, $25,000;

• Lake Superior Art Association, $25,000; and

• Marquette Arts and Culture Center, $20,000.

The Superior Central School District in Alger County will receive $9,000.

The MCACA is an agency within the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the state’s chief marketing arm focusing on business attraction, job creation, building Michigan’s image and fostering community development across the state.
