Ohio man drowns in Lake Superior
MARQUETTE — One man has died after a swimming accident in Alger County Wednesday.
The Alger County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Whitefish Point Road in Onota Township at approximately 3 p.m. for a possible drowning victim, according to a press release.
Dennis D. Kamento 73, of Gahanna, Ohio, was swimming at the beach off of Whitefish Point Road when he was pulled in by an undertow.
Despite efforts of family and neighbors, the release stated, Kameto ultimately drowned.
The U.S. Coast Guard located Kamento approximately 50 yards off-shore and lifted him by helicopter. He was transported to UP Health Systems-Marquette.
Kamento was pronounced dead during transport, the release stated.
“The Alger County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn all beach goers to use extreme caution when swimming in Lake Superior when the wind and wave conditions are strong,” the release said.
Alger County Rescue 21 dive team, the Onota Township Fire Department, and the AuTrain Township Fire Department responded to the scene, according to the release.
